Vintage Necktie Camisole

  

 

誰かが大切にしていたものに、新しい息吹を。

古着のネクタイをリメイクした定番のキャミソールの場合、使用しているネクタイの本数は約20本。アメリカとヨーロッパで買い付けをおこない、製造国も年代も異なる膨大なヴィンテージの山から1本1本をピックアップし、国内の工場で解体・裁断・縫製して1着を完成させる。ブランドのコンセプトは「誰かが大切にしていたものに、新しい息吹を」。ヴィンテージなら何でもいいというわけではなく、繊細な柄や美しい配色、そして、滑らかな肌触りや光沢感に作り手の思いが詰まっていて、蘇らせる価値があるものだけを選ぶ。そのため、アップサイクルではあるけれど、再利用だけを目的にした服作りとは根本的に違う。クリエイションの原動力はもっとシンプル。古着が好き、生地が好き、メンズのネクタイをパッチワークにしてキャミソールにしたらどうなるんだろう？　という初期衝動がすべて。NY、LA、パリ、ロンドン、日本。さまざまな国や都市で一度役割を終えたネクタイが集まり、世界に1着しかないキャミソールとして次の人生を始めるって想像するだけでワクワクする。20本ということは20人分の愛着が詰まっているということ。そのストーリーをもう1度紡ぐのが、「マリオン ヴィンテージ」の使命でもある。

Breathing new life into things that others cherished.

Our classic camisole is made using about twenty vintage neckties. Drawing from stock bought in America and Europe, we pick out a selection one by one from a heap of vintage ties from various countries and eras, which our factories in Japan then dismantle, cut into shape, and sew into new garments. Our concept as a brand is “Breathing new life into things that others cherished.” Since being vintage on its own is not enough, we only select items that have elegant patterns and gorgeous colors, as well as a smooth touch and sheen that convey the spirit of the person who made them. We pride ourselves in upcycling, but this goes beyond simply reusing old clothes to make new ones. The force propelling their creation is much more focused. Since we love vintage, and love fabric, we asked ourselves, wouldn’t it be fun to use men’s neckties to create a patchwork camisole?　That initial impulse says it all. New York, LA, Paris, London, Japan. Neckties from all over the world, finished with their first job, come together and begin a new life as a one-of-a-kind camisole. What could be more fun than that? Twenty ties means a legacy of love from twenty former owners. Spinning a whole new story is our mission here at MALION vintage. 

 

 

 

Design
手描きのラフスケッチに生地を貼り付け、ディテールを書き込み、服のイメージを具体化していく。
Tacking the fabric onto rough sketches drawn by hand, we flesh out the details and bring the garment to life.

Wash
買い付けたネクタイを洗濯機で洗って干す。風が吹くと数百本が旗のように大きく揺らぐ。
Our stock of ties is washed in washing machines and dried. When the wind blows, hundreds of ties flap in the breeze.

 

何年も、何十年もずっと着続けられる上質な服。

「これくらいのリメイクなら、私でもできそう」。2016年の最初のコレクションを見た方がポツリと放ったこのひと言をきっかけに、「ならば絶対に誰も真似できないものを作ろう」と決意が固まった。パッチワークの細かさやパターンニングの美しさはもちろん、それ以上に注力したのが服としてのクオリティだ。古着のリメイクと聞いて、耐久性の高い服を思い浮かべる人はゼロに近い。それもそのはず。経年で劣化した生地を縫い合わせているため、「古着だから仕方ない」という諦めが前提にある。その固定観念を払拭するべく、「マリオン ヴィンテージ」では買い付け、洗濯、選定、商品化するタイミングでトータル4回検品して耐久性を細かくチェック。解体・裁断・縫製は国内にいくつかあるファクトリーの熟達した職人がおこない、より長く着続けられるように、表から見えない裏側のステッチ部分には滑脱やほつれを防ぐためのシームテープを張り巡らせている。万が一、パーツの1枚が破れてしまっても大丈夫。「あらゆる修理に、とことん対応する」。これはブランド設立したときに決めたことだ。

A high-quality garment that will last for years, even for decades.

“If I wanted a recycled shirt like this, I could just make it myself.” This unvarnished piece of feedback from somebody who saw our first collection in 2016 motivated us to spruce things up, so that nobody could imitate our style. In addition to the delicateness of the patchwork and the beauty of the patterns, we paid extra attention to creating a quality piece of clothing. Almost nobody who hears the words “recycled clothing” is going to imagine something that will last. Which makes sense. There’s a persistent expectation that upcycled clothes are nothing more than worn-out scraps of fabric sewn together. Hoping to dispel this preconception, we at MALION vintage inspect all pieces for durability four times, when we purchase, wash, select, and use them to create new products. Materials are dismantled, cut into shape, and sewn together by passionate artisans at one of our domestic factories, where the stitching is inconspicuously reinforced from underneath using seam tape that prevents warping and fraying. In the rare event that one part tears, don’t fret. We will take care of any and all repairs. This is something we pledged to do when we started the brand.

 

 

Select
検品しつつ10本の束にまとめる。キャミソールの場合は2束。縫製仕様書と一緒に縫製工場へ送る。
During inspection, neckties are gathered into clusters of ten. The camisole uses two such clusters. These are shipped off in packets to the factory, along with sewing specifications.

Dismantling
1本1本ネクタイの縫製を糸切りバサミでほどき、芯地を抜いて解体。一番手間と時間がかかる工程。
Stitching is removed from each individual necktie using thread clippers, after which the lining is removed. Dismantling the ties is the most time-intensive step.

Cutting the Fabric
スチームをかけたら、パーツごとに切り分けられたパターンシートを土台にローラーカッターで裁断。
After steaming, the fabric is cut along a pattern made for each part of the garment using a rotary cutter.

 

「マリオン ヴィンテージ」というサイクルの構築。

1着のキャミソールを作るのに途方もない時間と労力を要するため、「そんな面倒な仕事は御免だ」と、国内の縫製工場へ足を運ぶたびに幾度となく断れられた。それでも、「価値あるヴィンテージを残したい。どうしてもクオリティに妥協できない。将来的にはパッチワークの生地をロールで販売するテキスタイルメーカーになって、リメイクの魅力を次世代の作り手に伝えたい。思い出のネクタイ持参で生地をオーダーできるシステムも構築したい」と夢を伝え、「マリオン ヴィンテージ」の考え方に賛同してくれるファクトリーをひたすら探し続けた。サステナブルという言葉がありふれている中で、本当の意味のサステナブルとは何かと問い続ける。環境に負荷をかけることなく、まったく別の製品にすることがアップサイクル。ただ、それだけで終わっては意味がない。作りのいいヴィンテージをしっかりした目で選び、上質さという付加価値を循環させて、劣化すれば何度でも修復し、愛着を途絶えさせない。そして、その文化を未来に繋げる。「マリオン ヴィンテージ」を、そんなサイクルにしたい。

Building a New Cycle at MALION vintage

Since making each camisole takes a considerable amount of time and labor, the majority of workshops that we visited in Japan declined to help, saying that the work was “too demanding.” We told anyone who’d listen about our dreams: to use vintage materials to make something of value and uncompromising quality, to eventually become a manufacturer of rolls of patchwork fabric, providing upcycled materials to the next generation of makers, and to create a system where folks can special-order garments made from neckties that have sentimental value. We searched high and low for factories that empathized with the MALION vintage perspective. In a world where sustainability has turned into a buzzword, we’re always asking ourselves how we can be more sustainable. Upcycling means making something entirely new, without putting a burden on the environment. But if that’s all we did, what would be the point? We select well-made vintage materials with a discerning eye, so that the quality continues up the cycle, and if our clothes ever do wear out, we’ll repair them every time, so that you never have to go without your favorite items. Most importantly, we’re making sure this practice lasts into the future. That’s the sort of cycle we want to perpetuate at MALION vintage.

 

Sewing
パズルのようにパーツで切り分けられた生地を、繊細な番手の糸で縫い合わせていく。
Cut out like puzzle pieces, the fabrics are sewn together using delicate thread.

Pressing
パッチワークの生地が出来上がったらアイロンでフラットにプレスし、裏側の縫製部分にシームテープを。
Once the patchwork fabric is assembled, we press it flat using an iron and reinforce it from the back using seam tape.

Quality Check
工場から届いた商品の生地と縫製をスタッフ総出で細かく最終チェックする。
When products arrive from the factory, staff work together to inspect the fabric and the sewing in a detailed final check.

 

Fitting
コレクションピースの場合は、モデルのフィッティングで微調整を重ねていく。
For collection pieces, each item is adjusted to perfection on the model to ensure a perfect fit.
